School Awards Program
COR recognizes public and private schools in Charleston County that successfully implement research-based literacy standards that promote school-wide reading. Volunteers update standards, review school applications and help with the celebration.
Home Awards Program
COR recognizes children from public and private schools whose families successfully implement research-based literacy standards that promote reading in the home. Children receive awards at a countywide celebration. Volunteers update standards, review home applications, and help with the celebration.
First Day Festival
COR hosts a booth at the City of Charleston’s First Day Festival in August. Children sign pledges to read and enter a drawing for baskets of books. Gently used books and reading tips for parents are distributed. Volunteers prepare materials and work in the booth.
Kid’s Fair
COR hosts a booth at Kid’s Fair, organized by the Charleston Jewish Community Center. Children engage in a reading activity and reading tips are given to parents. Volunteers prepare the activity and interact with children at the Fair.
Post & Courier’s Book & Author Luncheons
Each Fall and Spring, COR assists the Post & Courier with the Book and Author Luncheon. Volunteers help with decorating, hosting authors, greeting guests, and manning a COR booth.
Summer Reading Program with Charleston County Public Library
COR provides baskets of books as reading incentives for children. Volunteers prepare the baskets of books.
Book Drives
COR collects gently used books for future re-distribution to children and families. Volunteers organize books drives, attend book giveaways, and sort and categorize books.
Coordinating Committee
This group meets monthly to plan and implement COR activities. New members are always welcomed.
Board of Directors
This group meets four times a year to provide direction and
support for COR. New members are recruited annually.
Annual Giving Campaign/Grants
This campaign is sponsored by the Board of Directors and provides the financial support for COR. Volunteers develop mailing lists and campaign materials and receive donations. Grants and other funding sources are pursued.
Speakers & Membership
New members are always being recruited to COR. Volunteers share information with identified individuals and groups.
Website Development & Maintenance
A COR website is utilized to share the work of our organization and to highlight the importance and joy of reading. Volunteers update the website.
Communications
Spreading the word about COR is a top priority. Volunteers develop marketing materials.

COR was selected as a 2010 recipient of the Literacy Leaders Award given by the South Carolina Center for Children's Books and Literacy at the School of Library and Information Science at the University of South Carolina.
