Standards for Reading

  1. Let your child see you enjoy reading.
  2. Read aloud daily (brothers, sisters, parents, grandparents, etc.).
  3. Borrow books from the school and public libraries.
  4. Select books for your child based on his/her interests.
  5. Set aside a family reading time when each family member talks about what he/she is reading.
  6. Research answers to questions together; look up definitions for new vocabulary words together.
  7. Start and maintain a home library of magazines, books, and newspapers.
  8. Give books as gifts.

Standards for Communicating

  1. Let your child see you enjoy listening, speaking, and viewing.
  2. Spend time each day talking with and listening to your child.
  3. Ask specific questions about your child’s day.
  4. Play with your child.
  5. Read and talk about signs and labels in the home and community.
  6. Talk about books read.
  7. Listen to stories on audiotape, CD, radio and/or computer.
  8. Tell your child stories about you and your family.
  9. Respond to your child’s questions.
  10. Plan activities with your child that provide opportunities for enrichment and discussion.

Standards for writing

  1. Let your child see you enjoy writing.
  2. Provide opportunities for your child to draw, scribble and write.
  3. Start and maintain a family journal.
  4. Encourage your child to write grocery lists, chore lists, and “To Do” lists.
  5. Encourage your child to write notes, letters, and stories.
  6. Encourage your child to write and draw about books read.
